Description

Mashamoquet Brook State Park boasts both impressive geological features and an interesting trail system that provides access to all the areas and features of the park. The most famous park feature is the Wolf Den, into which Israel Putman, later a Major General in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary war, crept one night in 1742, to shoot a wolf that had preyed upon local sheep and poultry. Near the Den are the Table Rock and Indian chair stone formations. The park's entrance was once the site of a cider mill, grist mill and wagon shop. The old grist mill is maintained as a museum by the Pomfret Historical Society, whose members provide interpretation for interested visitors.

Alerts and Important Information

You can now make a reservation for the day before your arrival and up until 11 months in advance. For campsites, (excluding cabins) if you make your reservation within 7 days of your arrival you can book a 1 night stay on the weekends. The maximum length of stay is 14 consecutive days. If you have a 14 day reservation, all members of your camping party and your camping equipment must leave the park for 5 days before you can return. Any reservation with a departure date that is more than 11 months from today cannot be changed or cancelled for 18 days after the reservation was made for an inland campground and 25 days for sites at Hammonasset and Rocky Neck.

Campgrounds contains 53 sites divided into two loops. The Wolf Den Field loop has 35 sites numbered 1 through 35 in mostly open campsites with flush toilets, showers, drinking water, paved site pads and dumping station. The Mashamoquet loop has 18 sites numbered 41 through 60 (no sites #47 and 58) with wooded campsites with centrally located portable toilets. The Mashamoquet Campground does not have running water or showers .
PETS ARE NOT PERMITTED AT THIS CAMPGROUND. NO Hammocks tied to trees, water balloons, silly string, drones, or fireworks.

In an effort to protect Connecticut's forests from the introduction and spread of destructive insect pests - in particular the emerald ash borer and Asian long-horned beetle - the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is taking the following action:
It is PROHIBITED to transport firewood into State Parks Campgrounds and prohibited to transport firewood from out of state. Firewood is available for purchase at the Camp Office for $5 a bundle and fire starters are available for $1.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection greatly appreciates the public's assistance in helping to protect the state's natural resources and apologizes for any inconvenience this initiative may cause.

The maximum length of stay is fourteen consecutive days, and reservations can total no more than twenty-one days in the aggregate in any calendar year, pursuant to state law (CGS 23-16a).

CT Cancellation Policy: There is a $9.00 fee to cancel your reservation. If you cancel 2-7 days prior to your arrival date, you will also be charged one night's use fee. Note: Neither the park nor the call center can cancel a reservation within 2 days of arrival. Dissatisfaction due to reasons of weather, site conditions or other natural phenomena will not be considered sufficient cause for granting a refund.
Note: If you feel you have an exception to the cancellation policy, please submit your request in writing to the state park or forest campground where the campsite was rented. Your request should include details about why you feel an exception should be granted. The campground will verify registration and forward the request to the Department for review and consideration. Pavilion Reservations: If cancelling 0-6 days prior to arrival, there is no refund. If cancelling 7-29 days prior to arrival, there is a $9.00 cancel fee, a $25.00 service fee and the non-refundable reservation fee of $9.00 If cancelling 30+ days prior to arrival, there is a $9.00 cancel fee and the non-refundable reservation fee of $9.00. Note: Refunds will be sent by the state of Connecticut in check form within 6-8 weeks. Thank you!

Description

Geography:

Mashamoquet Brook State Park consists of 1,000 acres and is located in Pomfret, Ct. The park was formed by combining three parks: Mashamoquet Brook, Wolf Den, and Saptree Run. A large portion of the park was public domain even prior to the State Park and Forest Commission's creation in 1914, due to the foresight of the Daughters of the American Revolution, who had purchased the Wolf Den parcel in 1899. The State purchased this section from them in 1924 for the original 1899 price and added it to the first Mashamoquet Brook parcel which had been a gift of former Pomfret resident Sarah Fay. These areas, other purchases, and gifts (notably, in 1957, the 148 acre Hotchkins Wolf Den Farm parcel) have been combined to form the present 900-acre park.

Activities include picnicking, fishing, hiking, swimming, and field sports.

Facilities:

Two camping areas are available. The Wolf Den Campground offers 35 campsites, with restrooms, showers and drinking water. The Mashamoquet Brook Campground has 20 wooded sites, with portable toilets. There is no running water at the Mashamoquet Brook Campground. We have two Youth Group Camping Areas as well. Additional park facilities include out houses, swimming area (currently closed for swimming), picnic shelters, picnic tables, and grills.

From the east/Providence, RI: Take Route 6 west onto Route 101 west. Go west on Route 101 through Dayville, until it ends at Route 44 in Pomfret. Continue straight ahead onto Route 44 west for approximately 1 mile; Mashamoquet Brook State Park will be on your left.
From the west/Hartford: Take Route 84 east, Exit 69. At the end of the exit ramp, take a right onto Route 74 east. Go east on Route 74 until it ends. At the end of Route 74, take a left onto Route 44 east for approximately 10.9 miles; Mashamoquet Brook State Park will be on your right.
From the north: Go south on Route 395; take Exit 93. At the end of the exit ramp, take a right onto Route 101 west. Go west on Route 101 until it ends at Route 44. Continue straight ahead onto Route 44 west for approximately 1 mile; Mashamoquet Brook State Park will be on your left.
