Wadsworth Falls State Park showcases a mix of igneous and sedimentary rocks, primarily the Hampden Basalt and Portland Arkose, both of Jurassic age. The park's geology is characterized by features like differential weathering, cross-bedding, columnar basalt, and basalt vesicles. Most trails are considered intermediate with elevation gains and minor water crossings
Enjoy hiking or biking 4.5 miles of varied trails or explore the park’s namesake falls. For a longer stay, head to the park’s designated swimming and picnic area, fish the cold waters of the Coginchaug River, and relax beneath great hemlocks and noble oak where nature provides her own air conditioning.
Wadsworth Falls was designated as a park in 1942. Please note that swimming and picnicking are prohibited at the Big Falls — it is an area intended for short visits to view the scenic falls.

All-terrain chair users should proceed to the Wadsworth Falls State Park main entrance, located at 721 Middletown Avenue, Middletown, at the start of their reservation time.
Please note that the 'big falls' are not accessible from this location (as the trails are too far and too steep for the all-terrain wheelchairs to navigate), and you will have to drive your vehicle to view the big falls - just down the road at the Cherry Hill Road entrance in Middlefield (Rockfall).
