Bathhouse Construction to Impact 2026 Camping Season: Austin Hawes Campground will be undergoing necessary infrastructure updates to the bathhouses during the 2026 camping season. The project consists of two phases:
  • Phase 1: Demolition of the campground's North loop bathhouse (campsites 18-35) and construction of a new bathhouse in its place
  • Phase 2: Immediately following the completion of phase 1, Phase 2 will include the demolition of the campground's South loop bathhouse (campsites 1-17) and construction of a new bathhouse in its place
Construction will be taking place on weekdays, and campers should be aware that there will be active construction occurring during daytime hours, including the moving and operation of construction equipment and associated noise, exhaust and other impacts. The project is being completed in phases so that one of the campground's bathhouses will be available to campers during each phase of the project. Additionally, two handicapped accessible portable toilets will be available in the loop undergoing demolition/construction.

ATTENTION:: The Camp Office is open 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Campers checking in for cabins must be on site by 5:30 p.m. for check in. Running water is not available at this campground during the early season.

Other attractions include the 200 year old white pine picnic groves in the Matthies Grove and Whittemore Recreation Areas, over 11 miles of hiking trails, the Barkhamsted Lighthouse and other cultural and historic sites.

Geography:

Located in the Pleasant Valley section of Barkhamsted, the initial 213 acres of People's State Forest were a gift from the American Legion in 1927, to provide citizens an example of proper forest management, as observed by U.S. soldiers throughout Europe during World War I.

Recreation:

The park's signature trail, the Henry Buck Trail, leads through the forest to the ruins of an old cheese box mill, climbs the cliffs, and continues down the north slope. The park offers many other hikes on its eleven miles of trails, as well as cycling on park roads. Seasonal interpretive programs and displays on forestry, mammals, Native American culture, and local history are based at the Stone Museum, open weekends between Memorial Day and Columbus Day. Visitors are also welcome to camp, hunt, trap, picnic, snowshoe, cross-country ski, snowmobile, ice hike, go boating, canoeing, and kayaking, play field sports, and fish.

Facilities:

American Legion State Forest offers 29 campsites and 6 cabins in a wooded setting. Youth group camping is available at both American Legion and Peoples State Forests. Restrooms, a seasonally-operated museum, picnic shelters, and picnic tables are also available.

Nearby Attractions:

Nearby state parks include Burr Pond State Park, in Torrington, Penwood State Park, in Bloomfield, and Stratton Brook State Park, in Simsbury.
